Auto Shipping Insurance
While you're collecting your auto shipping company estimates and you're in the process of selecting an auto shipping company, one of the items you'll want clarified is the amount of insurance coverage that will be provided by the auto shipping service.
Although the majority of auto shipping experiences with trusted car transport companies are completed without a problem, most reliable auto shipping companies carry a type of cargo insurance that will provide coverage if damages occur or your vehicle is stolen. Nicks, dings and dents may be excluded.
When comparing auto shipping companies check with each to see what's covered and not covered. And, because your own car insurance policy may also provide coverage, find out if the auto shipping company's insurance is primary – will pay for damages or loss before your own insurance policy pays – or excess – will only pay amounts not covered by your car insurance policy. Be sure to check with your car insurance company for your policy's restrictions, exclusions and limitations.
Once you know what is covered and what is not, you might think about supplemental, temporary insurance for your car while it's in transit. This might be especially true if you are transporting an antique or other special type of vehicle.
Check all deductibles and policy limits. Limits could be especially important when you're transporting an antique or specialty vehicle with a market value far in excess of its book value.
